Ahmed Parvez was a modernist painter from Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He was a member of The Lahore Group in Pakistan and founder of the Pakistan Group in London. He was also among the few early modernists of Pakistani origin to have garnered considerable critical acclaim, with solo exhibitions at the New Vision, Lincoln, and Clement Stephens galleries in London, along with exhibitions at London’s Commonwealth Institute and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford between 1952 – 1964.

IQBAL HUSSAIN is a painter of conscience! Born into Lahore’s notorious ‘Shahi Mohalla’ or the Red Light District, the artist’s trouble childhood is reflected in these sensitive and provocative, vocal paintings that explore the treatment of women. Having graduated from the National College of Arts in 1974, the artist went on to have his first major exhibition in 1981. His work met with opposition and violence by Pakistan’s religious clergy. Mansoor Rahi is a senior painter born in 1939 in West Bengal. The artist graduated from Government College of Art and Craft in Dhaka and is known for his figurative Cubist paintings. Rahi held his first exhibition in 1957 and has exhibited extensively in Dhaka, Tokyo, Karachi, Peshawar, Rawalpindi etc. Mansoor Rahi has won several awards for his work including First Prize at Government College of Arts and CraftsDhaka (1961) PNCA (1969 and 1987) and Shakir Ali Award Biennale show PNCA. He is now widely considered a living Bangladeshi master.

RABIA YASEEN is a studio-based Ph.D researcher and visual artist since the last 8 years. SHIBLEE MUNIR is a popular contemporary artist with a background in miniature painting. In his work, the artist uses the formalist methods of Mughal court atelier artists. Shiblee Munir also has academic degrees from the Naqsh School of Arts and Beaconhouse National University. Soraya Sikander is a contemporary landscape painter known for inventing a mix of land into sea based paintings called ‘calligraphy landscapes’. The artist has exhibited at leading museums and galleries including Beijing Biennale, National Art Museum of China, Galerie Patries Van Dorst, National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah, National Art Gallery of Bangladesh etc.
Sadequain is Pakistan’s most renowned master artist. Sadequain’s paintings and murals are in major museums and organizations and he is considered a leading pioneer in modern Pakistani art movement. A number of publications are available on the life and art of Sadequain. The artist won several awards for his work including:Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 1960 from Government of Pakistan, Biennale de Paris in 1961 from Government of France, President’s Medal of Honor in 1962 and Cultural Award from Government of Australia in 1975. Tassaduq Sohail, a well-known contemporary painter, was born in Jullundar in 1930 and later migrated to Lahore. His family moved him to Karachi in 1952. In Karachi, he found a rich Urdu literary circle and joined them where he was termed as qissa-go, for his talent of tale-narrating, by Muhammad Hasan Askari, the urdu teacher and critic. Sohail moved to London in 1961 and started painting to win female friends and to overcome his loneliness and succeeded in his objectives. But soon the painting became his passion and he joined evening classes at the St. Martin School of Art and art became his career. His first exhibition was held in London in 1978, and over the years there have been so many that he has lost count of them. He states, “They must be in thousands. These include watercolours, pastels, pen and ink and whatnot, but I have kept no record”. Almost after three decades his paintings arrived at Bonham’s – the international art auction house in 2007 that gave him stature of an international artist.
Bashir Mirza or BM is one of Pakistan’s most sought after master painters. BM was born in 1941 in Amritsar and went on to join the Mayo School of Art present day NCA. The artist is known for his vibrant colours and numerous art series such as ‘Lonely girls’, ‘Flower girls’, ‘King and Queen’ – these later on went on to break South Asian Art records at international art auction houses. Shahid Jalal (born 1948) is a senior painter with paintings in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Pakistan, the national Assembly, Prime Minister’s House, World Bank, Foreign Office and Pakistan House, Delhi as well as other prominent public and private organizations. The artist held his first major exhibition in October 1980. To date, the artist has exhibited in Washington, Sotheby’s London, Stockholm and Delhi Trinale. Shahid Jalal has participated in several solo and group shows across Pakistan and abroad.
Gulgee (1926 – 2007) is Pakistan’s most action calligraphy artist. Recipient of Pride of performance, Sitara-e-Imtiaz, Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the artist received several awards and international acknowledgement during his lifetime. His work featured prominently in art publications and the artist rose to global fame in his lifetime. Originally having been trained as an engineer, Gulgee is a self-taught artist of calligraphy, abstracts and his renowned lapuz lazuli portraits.
Imran Mudassar has Bachelors in Fine Arts with a Distinction from National College of Arts, and was awarded the Award of Excellence by Alhamra Art Gallery, Lahore. He has shown in Art Hong Kong (2010), “Assemble Reassemble”, Devi Art Foundation, New Delhi (2010). He has completed a residency at the Visual Art Collective (Khoj International Artists Residency), Banglore, and has had two solo exhibitions in Pakistan as well as participating in various group shows.
